The basics

BPC-157, short for body protection compound, is a synthetic 15-amino-acid fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice. In animal studies it speeds the healing of tendon, ligament, muscle, and gut tissue, apparently by promoting new blood vessel growth and the activity of fibroblasts, the cells that lay down collagen.

We review the studies, the potential uses and benefits, and the open questions in our research post, BPC-157 for Tendon and Gut Healing, and What the Research Shows So Far.

What the evidence looks like

Preclinical. Nearly all of the data come from rodent studies, much of it from a single research group, and no randomized controlled trial in humans has been published.

Why patients ask about it

  • Tendon and ligament injuries that are slow to heal
  • Muscle strains and recovery after surgery
  • Gut lining problems

Good to know

  • Compounded BPC-157 is not FDA-approved.
  • It promotes blood vessel growth, so we don't prescribe it to patients with active cancer.
  • It's on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list.

BPC-157 for Tendon and Gut Healing, and What the Research Shows So Far

BPC-157 heals rat tendons, ligaments, and gut lesions in study after study. Nearly all of that work comes from one laboratory, and no randomized human trial exists. Here's how I weigh it.
